Park in well-reviewed spots, keep valuables out of sight, and a steering lock deters trouble. Carry pan-European breakdown cover, a green card for non-EU borders, and travel insurance valid in the non-EU Balkans (plus GHIC/EHIC for EU stops). Pack a first-aid kit and a CO/gas alarm.

👶 Travelling with kids

Fit proper child seats, plan shorter driving days with frequent breaks, and favour spots with shade, space and facilities. Book a campsite with a playground every few nights to reset — and keep snacks, water and entertainment within reach.

🐾 Travelling with pets

You'll need a microchip + valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport (or EU Animal Health Certificate); some countries also require tapeworm treatment. Non-EU borders (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia) have their own entry rules. Never leave a pet in a hot van, and note vet locations along the route.
